Juan Villegas (52 años) ha trabajado en la estación de servicio de unasolitaria ruta patagónica durante los últimos veinte años de su vida. Laestación ha sido vendida y los nuevos dueños piensan en modernizarla. Juan,junto con otros empleados, es despedido. Vive el drama de la desocupación en suaspecto más trágico: con la edad que tiene y sin especialización alguna,comienza a entender que ha sido descartado del mundo. La casualidad lo lleva ahacer un pequeño trabajo de reparación de un viejo vehículo en una estancia. Ladueña, una señora mayor, necesita vender el auto de su difunto marido, porquetambién está en aprietos económicos. Cuando Juan finaliza el trabajo, ellaofrece pagarle con un perro que no es un perro cualquiera, sino un estupendoejemplar de dogo. Juan intenta negarse aduciendo que, con semejante tamaño, elperro debe comer más que él. Sin embargo la viuda insiste y termina porconvencerlo. A partir de ahí la suerte de Juan comienza a cambiar.

The station has changedhands and the new owners are thinking of modernizing. Juan, as well as otheremployees, is sacked. Finding himself without an occupation is a real tragedyfor him; at his age and without any specialization he begins to feel he hasbeen rejected by the world. Then by chance he does a small repair job on an oldvehicle in a station. The owner, an elderly lady, needs to sell her latehusband’s car because she’s also in economic straits. When Juan finishes thejob she offers to pay him with a dog but this is not just any old dog, it is asplendid example of a mastiff. Juan tries to refuse considering that such a bigdog must eat more than he does. However the widow insists and ends upconvincing him. From then on Juan’s luck begins to change.
