El recorrido músico-vital que vivieron los donostiarras, desde su creación en 1940 hasta su disolución en 1961, es difícil de calibrar con los ojos de hoy en día. Los Xey fueron, aunque hoy las nuevas generaciones les desconozcan, unos de los grupos musicales más famosos del mundo. Además de en España, desde Argentina a Estados Unidos, pasando por Uruguay, Chile, Perú, México, Puerto Rico y Cuba, entre otros países, dejaron una huella en bastantes generaciones.
En una época en la que en la radio se ofrecían shows en directo y la televisión todavía no había aparecido, no había teatro, cabaret o radio que no solicitara sus actuaciones. Unos republicanos, perdedores de una guerra y a los que cantaron en sus conciertos, se convirtieron en estrellas que compitieron de tú a tú con las más rutilantes voces del continente americano, estuvieron nueve años de gira, llegando a inaugurar la televisión mexicana, además de participar en infinidad de películas y grabaciones.
Algunas de sus canciones han llegado hasta nosotros, aunque ignoremos que fueron ellos los que las hicieron populares. Quizá la más famosa sea “Buen Menú”. Llegaron a codearse con estrellas y presidentes de países latinoamericanos.
Este documental es un intento de recuperar su memoria en el siglo XXI de la mano de sus descendientes, expertos musicales y sus homólogos de nuestros días los Golden Apple Quartet que van a dedicar su próximo espectáculo para homenajearles.
A través de las “Memorias de uno de los Xey”, escritas en sus últimos días de vida por Sabin Olascoaga, tenor tiplón como el mismo se define, entre otros documentos a los que hemos tenido acceso y otros que esperamos encontrar en la fase desarrollo, haremos un recorrido por el periplo músico-vital de sus componentes intentando rehacer una visión social y musical de una época.

Viewed through today’s eyes it’s difficult to calculate the productive musical career these Basques enjoyed from their creation in 1940 to their dissolution in 1961. Although unknown to new generations, Los Xey was one of the most famous musical groups in the world. Not only did they leave an important musical legacy for many generations in Spain, but also from Argentina to the US passing through Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Cuba among other countries.
At a time when the radio offered live shows and television had yet to appear, there was not a theatre, cabaret or radio station that didn’t demand their performances. A few republicans, the losers of a war and to whom they sang in their concerts turned them into stars competing as equals with the greatest singing stars of the American continent. They spent 9 years touring and even inaugurated Mexican television not to mention taking part in numerous films and recordings.
Some of their songs have been passed down to us, although we’re unaware which ones made them popular´, but perhaps the most famous or well-known is ‘Buen Menu’. They even got to rub shoulders with the stars and presidents of Latin American countries.
This documentary is an attempt to recover their memory in the 21st century at the hand of their descendants, musical experts and their modern day counterparts the Golden Apple Quartet whose next show will be a tribute to them.
We’re taking a journey through the productive musical period of its members with the aid of the ‘Memoirs of one of the Xey’, written by Sabin Olascoaga, a tiple (falsetto) tenor, his own definition, at the end of his days, in an endeavour to recreate a social-musical vision of a period long past.
