El joven Gabriel Araceli trabaja de cajista en una modesta imprenta de Madrid. Su novia, Inés, es una guapa chica huérfana que vive en Aranjuez, acogida por su tío, don Celestino Santos del Malvar, humilde sacerdote pariente lejano del poderosoministroGodoy. En la visita al Real Sitio para ver a la novia, Gabriel coincide con el histórico motín del 19 de marzo contra Godoy, cuyo palacio es asaltado por la turba.Pensando en el bien de la chica, don Celestino consiente en que Inés se traslade a Madrid, para vivir con sus también parientes, que tienen tienda de paños en la capital. Pero allí los tales parientes convierten a Inés en una sirvienta. Y, trasmuchaperipecia, Gabriel consigue huir con Inés aprovechando el tumultuoso recibimiento que el pueblo de Madrid rinde al nuevo rey Fernando VII, El Deseado.La enamorada pareja se refugia en la pensión del chico, situada en la calle de San José, frente al Parque de Monteleón. Su proyecto es huir a Cádiz, ciudad natal del muchacho. Pero el día del 2 de mayo estalla la revuelta popular contra losdestacamentos imperiales. Y, accidentalmente, Gabriel Araceli se ve envuelto en las feroces luchas que tienen lugar en la Puerta del Sol y otros lugares de Madrid.

Young Gabriel Araceli works as a cashier for a modest printer in Madrid. Gabriel is visiting the Real Sitio to see his girlfriend just when the historical 19 March rebellion against Godoy takes place. But once she’s there the so-called relatives make Inés work as aservant.After many adventures, Gabriel manages to flee with Inés making the most of the tumultuous reception that the population of Madrid gives to the new king Fernando VII, El Deseado (The desired).The pair of lovers takes refuge in the boy’s boarding house, located in San José Street, opposite the Moneleón Park. Their plan is to flee to Cadiz, the lad’s home town. But on 2 May the popular revolt against the imperial detachment breaks out.And bychance, Gariel Araceli finds himself mixed up in the ferocious fighting which takes place in the Puerta del Sol and other sites in Madrid.
