Manila, 1959. Jaime Gil De Biedma (30) es un carismático directivo de la Compañía de Tabacos de Filipinas… durante el día. Por la noche el poeta libera su homosexualidad en los clubes de los bajos fondos de la ciudad. Así conoce a Johnny, un jovenquetrabaja en un cabaret erótico. La pobreza de Manila impresiona vivamente a Jaime y agudiza su conciencia social.De regreso a Barcelona, la policía le interroga sobre sus amistades subversivas, que aún sueñan con un cambio de régimen en el país. Visita a su amigo y editor Carlos Barral y se encuentra con Juan Marsé, un joven escritor que está a punto depublicarsu primera novela.Paralelamente, Jaime intenta salvar su relación con Luis, su amante, pero éste le abandona. El padre de Jaime soluciona el asunto de la policía, pero le advierte a su hijo de que debe poner orden en su vida, porque compromete a la familia y a laempresa.Mediados los años 60, la sociedad de estabiliza y un nueva generación se congrega en la sala de fiestas Bocaccio. Allí Jaime conoce a la sexy y enigmática Bel (28), divorciada y con dos hijos, y entabla una relación con ella.Jaime ha comprado un apartamento y le ha pedido a Bel que se case con él, pero ella lo rechaza: son dos seres libres y eso sería condenar su relación al fracaso. Abrumado por los acontecimientos, Jaime se pierde en la noche y se emborracha. Esamismanoche, Bel muere en un accidente de tráfico. Al conocer la noticia, Jaime se hunde definitivamente e intenta suicidarse.Poco a poco consigue recuperarse, con el apoyo de su familia y amigos. Pero ya no volverá a escribir poesía.A comienzos de los años 70 Jaime viaja a Filipinas y tiene que vérselas con los cambios económicos que la empresa viven bajo la dictadura de Marcos. A su regreso, Jaime conoce a Toni, un joven ayudante de fotógrafo de origen humilde, con quieniniciauna relación sentimental. Éste, por su parte, se empeña en aprender de Jaime y le pide que le introduzca en un mundo de sofisticación desconocido para él.A la muerte del el padre de Jaime y los acontecimientos se precipitan: la creciente tensión entre él y Toni desemboca en una riña violenta en la casa de campo que Jaime ha comprado como nido de amor. Toni le expulsa de la casa, Jaime tropieza yquedamalherido bajo la nieve.Tras la muerte de Franco el país recupera la democracia mientras un maduro Jaime vive sus días con un joven actor de teatro. El paso del tiempo y la enfermedad hacen mella en él. Sus amigos, que saben que Jaime se muere, le organizan un recital enlaResidencia de Estudiantes que se convierte en un reconocimiento público al poeta. Pero Jaime ya sólo quiere despedirse de la vida.
Manila, 1959. Charismatic Jaime Gil de Biedma (30) is a director of the Philippine Tobacco Company during the day…. but at night, the poet gives free reign to his homosexuality in the nightclubs of the city’s underbelly. This is how he meetsJohnny, ayoung man who works in an erotic cabaret. The poverty of Manila makes a deep impression on Jaime and heightens his social conscience.Back in Barcelona, the Spanish police interrogate Jaime about some of his subversive friends who are still dreaming of regime change in Spain. He visits his friend and editor Carlos Barral, and meets Juan Marsé, a young writer about to publish hisfirstnovel.At the same time as all of this, Jaime is trying to save his relationship with Luis, his lover, but the latter leaves him. Jaime’s father takes care of Jaime’s trouble with the police, but he warns his son he has to sort his life out because he isputting his family and the business in jeopardy.By the mid 1960’s, society is increasingly becoming unstable and a new generation is meeting in the Bocaccio nightclub. There, Jaime meets the sexy and enigmatic Bel (28), divorced with two kids and with whom he quickly establishes a relationship.Jaime has bought an apartment and asks Bel to marry him, but she turns him down: they are two free spirits; getting married would condemn their relationship to failure. Overwhelmed by events, Jaime loses himself in the night and gets very drunk.Thatsame night, Bel dies in a traffic accident. When he hears the news, Jaime becomes totally desperate and tries to take his own life.But he manages to get back on his feet with the support of friends and family. However, Jaime he will never write poetry again.At the beginning of the 1970’s, Jaime goes to the Philippines and has to deal with the economic changes which the company is going through under the Marcos dictatorship. On his return, Jaime meets Toni, a young photography assistant of humblebackground, and they begin a sentimental relationship. Toni, for his part, insists on learning all he can from Jaime and asks him to introduce him into his sophisticated world, unknown to him.Jaime’s dad dies and events pile up on each other; the growing tension between Jaime and Toni leads to a violent confrontation in the country house which Jaime has bought as their love nest. Toni throws him out, and Jaime trips and is injured inthesnow.After the death of Franco, democracy is restored in Spain and a mature Jaime lives out his days with a young stage actor. The passing of time and illness have left their mark on him. His friends, who know that Jaime is dying, organise a poetryrecitalin the Residencia de Estudiantes (Madrid’s famous Students Residence) which turns into a public acclamation of the poet. But Jaime only wants to say goodbye.
