Juan Negrín, jefe de Gobierno de la Segunda República entre 1937 y 1945, vivió los últimos años de su exilio en el anonimato, ocupado de la tutela de sus nietos Carmen y Juan, los vástagos de su hijo Rómulo, una víctima circunstancial de lassospechasypersecuciones de la Guerra Fría. Nunca respondió a la infinidad de maledicencias que tanto vencedores como vencidos de la guerra española, vertieron sobre su figura, ensombreciéndola hasta nuestros días.Supo, nada más llegar a la jefatura de Gobierno, que saldría malparado. Ha debido pasar muchotiempo, cuando el olvido pesa más que todas las afrentas, para que el trabajo de los historiadores, distanciado de los antagonismos y deslealtades que acarrea todo conflicto bélico, pudiera restituir el calado intelectual, político e histórico deJuanNegrín, finalmente reconocido como un exponente clave de la Edad de Plata de la ciencia española y como el gran estadista de España en guerra.

Juan Negrín , the leader of the Government of the Second Republic (1937 to 1945) lived the last years of his exile in obscurity, busy taking care of his grandchildren, Carmen and Juan, the off-spring of his son Rómulo, a victim of the suspicionsandpersecutions of the Cold War. He never replied to the malicious gossip against him which came from the victors as well as the defeated in the Spanish Civil War. This gossip has cast a shadow over his personality up until today.He knew as soon as he became the head of the Government that things would turn out badly for him. He became a scapegoat for everyone but always acted in line with his conscience without once shying away from the fate which life had marked out forhim.Now many years have gone by and oblivion has greater weight than all the insults so it is only now at a time far removed from the antagonism and disloyalty which all armed conflict cause, that historians could restore Juan Negrín’s intellectual,political and historic standing. So he has finally been recognized as the key exponent of the “Silver Age” of Spanish science and the great statesman of Spain at war.
