Miguel es nombrado párroco de un pueblo socialista coincidiendocon la sublevación de 1936. Desde el inicio de la guerra, el bandonacional ocupa el pueblo y pronto se suceden los fusilamientos. Ensu lucha por defender a los represaliados, Miguel se enfrenta a lajerarquía eclesiástica y militar, poniendo en juego su propia vida.El joven sacerdote encuentra refugio en su amistad con la maestradel pueblo, cuyo marido ha sido asesinado al inicio de la contienda.La relación con Margari supone el contrapunto al desencanto deljoven párroco y su único apoyo en un camino que debe recorrersolo.Basada en una historia real, la película recoge con fidelidadhistórica el apoyo de la Iglesia Católica al levantamiento contra laRepública, bautizado como “Santa Cruzada”. A lo largo de tresaños de Guerra Civil, Miguel siente como el propio clero se alejadel Evangelio al amparar la represión de los sublevados contra lapoblación civil. El protagonista encarna la fuerza de las propiasconvicciones y la coherencia personal, en una llamada apasionaday atemporal contra la injusticia.

A young priest arrives in his fi rst assignment to a small parish servinga working-class village in the north of Spain in 1936. He is a witnessof the military uprising that precipitates the Spanish Civil War and,moved by his faith, he stands up to defend his people. From thebeginning of the war, the village where the young protagonist arrivesremains within the area of the Francoist military insubordinates. Itsoon becomes a top target of repression for being considered asa “red village”.The loneliness haunting him brings Miguel close to Margari, a youngschoolteacher, whose husband was killed by the fascists. Margaribecomes the only shelter in the path of Miguel’s helpless fi ght, aswell as the only aid to offset his deep disappointment.Based on a real story, the fi lm portrays how the young priest commitshimself to stand by his parishioners and how he denounces fromthe pulpit and before the Catholic Hierarchy the atrocities beingcommitted on behalf of the Gospel (written of as a Holy Crusade)to the extent that he will risk his own life in the name of Christ.
