Jean Baptiste Grenouille nació en mitad del hedor de los restos de pescado deun mercado y fue abandonado por su madre en la basura. El chico creció en unambiente hostil, nadie le quería e incluso sus compañeros intentaron asesinarley todo porque había algo que lo hacía diferente: no tenía olor. Sin embargo JeanBaptiste poseía un olfato excepcional. A los 20 años consigue trabajar para elperfumero Bandini, quien le enseña a destilar esencias. Pero él quería atraparotros olores, el olor del cristal, del cobre... y sobretodo el olor de ciertasmujeres. A cambio de centenares de fórmulas de perfumes con los que Bandini seenriqueció, le escribió una carta de recomendación para aprender el arte de"enfleurage"  en la capital mundial del perfume: Grasse. Una vez allí, consiguesu objetivo, un perfume cuyos ingredientes son la esencia de jóvenes muchachasde la ciudad, a las cuales debía matar y mutilar para obtenerla.

Jean Baptiste Grenouille was born in the midst of the stench of fish remains ina market and was abandoned in the rubbish by his mother. The boy grew up in ahostile environment, nobody loved him and even his companions tried to kill himand all because something made him different; he had no smell. However, JeanBaptiste had an exceptional sense of smell. When he was twenty he got a jobworking in the Bandini perfumery where he was taught to distil essences. Inexchange for hundred of formulas for perfumes which would make Bandini rich hewrote him a letter of recommendation to learn the art of “enfleurage” in Grasse,the world capital of perfume. Once there he achieved his objective; a perfumewhose ingredients were the essence of the young girls of the city but he had tokill and mutilate them to get it.
