"Los hijos de Mama Wata" es una historia de solidaridad, dignidad y de fe que retrata el día a día de los más pobres del mundo. Los protagonistas del documental representan al pueblo sierraleonés en su lucha por lasupervivencia y la superación.Mama Wata es la diosa del mar que concede riquezas a Sierra Leona. La Bahía de Goderich (Freetown) ha recibido como regalo la abundancia de pescado en sus aguas. Idrissa, un pescador de esa comunidad, sabe que aunque cuente con la ayuda de ladiosadebeluchar contra los grandes buques extranjeros, la pesca ilegal y el uso de cayucos por parte de los narcotraficantes. Esos peces donados por Mama Wata garantizan que la pescadera Memuna pueda mantener a sus diez hijos. Ella, como otras mujeres delacomunidad, ha visto como su marido la abandonaba sin mirar atrás. A Saffie le ocurrió con 17 años y dos hijos. Ahora, es la madre de muchos más porque cuida a los niños de las vendedoras ambulantes de su vecindario. Ella nunca ha tenido elprivilegiodeir a la escuela como si hicieron Suphie y Mustapha, aunque no les ha servido para conseguir trabajo. Ellos están abocados a la inmigración o a continuar con la tradición familiar de la pesca artesanal.
“The Children of Mama Wata” is a story of solidarity, dignity and faith. It portrays the everyday life the poorest people in the world. The protagonists of the documentary represent the people of Sierra Leone in their fight for survival andovercomingthe odds.Mama Wata is a sea goddess who provides Sierra Leone with wealth. She has blessed Goderich Bay (Freetown) with an abundance of fish. Idrissa, a local fisherman, knows that she looks over him as he battles against international ships, illegalfishingand the use of boats for drug running. Memuna, a local fish vender, and her ten children depend greatly on Mama Wata´s bounty. Like many women in the village, her husband left her to fend for herself. Saffie suffered the same fate when she wasjust17with two children. Now she is mother of several more as she cares for the local children when their parents head off to sell at market. Saffie never had the privilege of going to school like Suphie and Mustapha, although it has not helped them tofindwork. Unless they want to become fishermen like their fathers, they will have to look abroad to seek work.
