Alberto es un joven portugués de ideas monárquicas, que en 1912 se encuentraexiliado en Belém do Pará. Allí es contratado por Velasco, un capataz español,para trabajar en el cauchal de Juca Tristao en pleno corazón de la Amazonia.Después de un largo viaje por el río Amazonas, en condiciones infrahumanas,llega al cauchal Paraíso donde es puesto a trabajar en la recolección delcaucho, en mitad de la selva, bajo la protección del cearense Firmino.Alberto descubre allí un mundo que le es extraño y salvaje, en el que losindios, la fiebre y la locura de los hombre son peligros cotidianos. Perotambién descubre la amistad, la lealtad y la solidaridad de los caucherosfrente al poder despótico de sus exploradores.

Alberto, a young Portuguese man with monarchist ideas, is in exile in Belém doPará in 1912. There he is employed by Velasco, a Spanish foreman, to work inJuca Tristao, a rubber plantation in the heart of the Amazon.After a long journey down the River Amazon under subhuman conditions he arrivesat the Paraiso rubber plantation where he is put to work collecting rubber inthe middle of the jungle under the protection of the Firmino.Alberto discovers a world which is strange and wild for him, in which theIndians, fever and the madness of men are everyday dangers. But he also findsfriendship, loyalty and the solidarity of the rubber plantation workers againstthe despotic power of their exploiters.

Il y est engagé par Velasco, un contremaître espagnol, pourtravailler dans la plantation de caoutchouc de Juca Tristao, au cœur del’Amazone.Au terme d’un long voyage sur le fleuve Amazone, dans des conditionsinfrahumaines, il arrive à la plantation Paraíso où on le met à travailler à larécolte du caoutchouc, au milieu de la forêt vierge, sous la protection deFirmino.Alberto découvre un monde inconnu et sauvage, dans lequel les indiens, lafièvre et la folie des hommes sont des dangers quotidiens. Mais il y découvreégalement l’amitié, la loyauté et la solidarité des récolteurs de caoutchoucface au pouvoir despotique de ceux qui les exploitent.
